Made With Lau: A Chinese Cooking YouTube Channel Success

It all started in the spring of 2020, when folks were forced to stay at home due to the pandemic. Randy Lau was in his 30s, and his “Daddy Lau” was retired and had 50 years of cooking experience. So why not start a YouTube channel focused on classic Chinese cooking?

Why not, indeed? It took just 2 months for the Made With Lau channel to gather enough subscribers to actually earn the Lau family some money. Sure, it was just $3.57, but it boded well for the channel’s future. Now they have close to a million subscribers on YouTube, plus another quarter of a million more on TikTok. They offer a carefully chosen mix of traditional Cantonese home cooking, along with more familiar dishes that you’d find in restaurants, and the whole thing is a smashing success.

It helped that Randy also had some experience with digital marketing, and he spent about half a year on development and production to get the YouTube channel running. And it sure didn’t hurt that Daddy Lau was an absolute natural on camera. And Randy didn’t mess with Daddy Lau’s camera presence and kept everything authentic. Instead of dubbing over his dad’s speech, he just subtitled them in both English and Cantonese.

Their videos are classic examples of information sharing, starting with their first-ever video that covered their Cantonese version of mapo tofu (which is a classic Chinese tofu dish. They showed each step of how the dish was made, and also offered a history of the dish. There’s even an audience Q&A segment, which is now a common part of all their videos.

Their instructions are super-friendly for beginners, and Daddy Lau sure knows what he’s talking about. The emotional engagement is undeniable as well. It’s like having a friendly Chinese neighbor coming over to your home to teach you how to cook their favorite dishes!
